What Are Flashcards?

Flashcards are a well-established study method for memorizing facts, vocabulary, formulas, and concepts. Cocovox enhances traditional flashcards with AI generation and spaced repetition to maximize your learning efficiency.

Creating Flashcards

Method 1: AI Generation

1

Go to Learn → Flashcards → Create

2

Enter a topic (e.g., "Spanish food vocabulary" or "World War II causes")

3

Choose the number of cards and difficulty level

4

Review and edit the generated cards, then save

Method 2: From Documents

Upload a PDF, image, or document and let AI extract key concepts into flashcards.

Method 3: Manual Creation

Create cards one by one with your own questions and answers.

Tip: After an AI Tutor session, click "Create Flashcards" to automatically generate cards from the concepts you discussed.

Studying Flashcards

Basic Mode

  1. A card appears with the question/front side
  2. Think of your answer
  3. Click or tap to reveal the answer
  4. Rate how well you knew it (Easy, Good, Hard, Again)

Spaced Repetition

Our algorithm tracks which cards you know well and which need more practice. Cards you struggle with appear more often, while mastered cards are shown less frequently. This research-supported method helps you:

  • Learn faster by focusing on weak areas
  • Remember longer with optimal review timing
  • Study efficiently with less wasted time

Flashcard Features

Audio Support

Click the speaker icon to hear cards read aloud. Especially useful for vocabulary and language learning.

Image Cards

Add images to cards for visual learning - great for anatomy, art history, or geography.

Hints

Add optional hints that appear when you're stuck, giving you a nudge without revealing the full answer.

Tags and Organization

Tag your flashcard decks by subject, chapter, or exam to find them quickly later.

Study Modes

  • Learn - Focus on new cards you haven't mastered
  • Review - Practice cards that are due for review
  • Cram - Quick review of all cards before a test
  • Test - Quiz yourself without seeing answers

Sharing Flashcards

Share your flashcard decks with classmates or students:

  • Generate a share link for anyone to access
  • Export as printable PDF
  • Teachers can assign decks to classes

Progress Tracking

Track your flashcard mastery:

  • New - Cards you haven't studied yet
  • Learning - Cards you're actively working on
  • Review - Cards you've learned but need to maintain
  • Mastered - Cards you know well

Daily Goals

Set a daily flashcard goal to build a study habit. Earn XP and maintain your streak by hitting your goal each day.

Mobile Gestures

On mobile devices, you can use swipe gestures for fast, natural card navigation:

  • Swipe left - Move to the next card
  • Swipe right - Go back to the previous card
  • Tap - Flip the card to reveal the answer

Swipe gestures work in all study modes and are optimized for one-handed use in the thumb zone.

Word Bank Mode

For flashcards that require typed answers, you can switch to word bank mode. Instead of typing, you select your answer from a set of chips displayed below the card. The word bank includes the correct answer along with plausible distractors, making it ideal for:

  • Younger learners still developing typing skills
  • Vocabulary and language learning where recognition matters more than recall
  • Quick review sessions on mobile devices

Onboarding Flow

First-time users are guided through a modern onboarding flow that introduces flashcard features step by step. The onboarding covers creating your first deck, choosing a study mode, and setting daily goals. You can revisit the onboarding anytime from the flashcard settings menu.

Best Practice: Short, frequent study sessions (10-15 minutes) are more effective than long cramming sessions. Aim to review your due cards daily.
