Parental Controls

Keep your children safe while they learn

Overview

Parental controls help you manage your child's learning experience and keep them safe online. You can control screen time, content access, social features, and more.

Accessing Parental Controls

Log in to your parent account

Go to Settings → Family

Select the child you want to configure

Click Parental Controls

Screen Time Limits

Control how much time your child spends on Cocovox:

Daily Limits

  • Set a maximum number of minutes per day
  • Warnings appear when time is running low
  • Content locks when the limit is reached

Scheduled Hours

  • Set when Cocovox is available (e.g., 3pm-8pm)
  • Block access during school hours or bedtime
  • Configure different schedules for weekdays and weekends

Bonus Time

Grant extra time as a reward for good learning behavior.

Recommendation: For young children (ages 4-8), we recommend 15-30 minutes per session. For older children, 30-60 minutes of focused learning is effective.

Content Controls

Subject Restrictions

Limit which subjects your child can access if you want to focus on specific areas.

Content Difficulty

Lock content to a specific grade level or allow adaptive difficulty that adjusts to your child's performance.

AI Tutor Settings

  • Enable or disable AI tutoring
  • Set topic restrictions
  • Require approval for certain question types

Social Features

Control how your child interacts with others:

Leaderboards

  • Off - Child doesn't see or appear on leaderboards
  • Class Only - Only visible to classmates (if in a class)
  • On - Visible on public leaderboards (name hidden for under 13)

Messaging

For children under 13, messaging is disabled by default and cannot be enabled.

Profile Visibility

Control what others can see:

  • Display name only (no real name)
  • Avatar only (no photo)
  • Achievements hidden or visible

Privacy Controls

Data Collection

Review and manage what data is collected about your child:

  • Learning activity and progress
  • Usage analytics
  • Voice recordings (if using voice features)

Data Sharing

Control who can see your child's data:

  • Teachers - If enrolled in a class
  • Family members - Other parents on the account

Delete Data

Request deletion of your child's data at any time from the privacy settings.

Notifications

Set up alerts to stay informed:

  • Daily Summary - What your child learned today
  • Achievement Alerts - When they earn badges or complete goals
  • Inactivity Alerts - If they haven't learned in X days
  • Struggle Alerts - If they're having difficulty with topics

Purchase Controls

Prevent unauthorized purchases:

  • PIN required for any purchases
  • Disable in-app purchases entirely
  • Receive email alerts for purchase attempts
Note: Children's accounts on the Family plan cannot make purchases directly. All billing is managed through the parent account.

App-Specific Settings

Voice Features

  • Enable/disable voice recording
  • Enable/disable text-to-speech

Camera Access

  • Allow/disallow photo uploads
  • Allow/disallow document scanning

Resetting Controls

If you need to start fresh, you can reset all parental controls to default settings for your child's age group.

Bypassing Controls

As the parent, you can temporarily bypass controls using your parent PIN. Useful for sitting with your child for extended learning sessions.
